Lactobacillus plantarum DR7 -

Improves Alzheimer’s Disease

NI-Asia-19-logo-finalists-reg.jpg

AD is one of the most detrimental brain diseases and is most prevalent in the aging and aged populations. One of the primary culprits is the formation of protein plaque in the brain. Fruit fries (Drosophila melanogaster) is a good model to study AD, where mutants of fruit fries with AD have been developed.

Normal fruit fries without AD have perfect eye structures:

• Hexagonal and neatly arranged ommatidias

• Straight and neatly arranged bristles

Mutant fruit fries with AD have malformed eye structures:

• Lost of hexagonal shapes in ommatidias

• Ommatidias are no longer neatly arranged

• Bristles are broken and no longer neatly arranged

• Formation of holes on ommatidias

Lactobacillus plantarum DR7 improved eye structures(n=20) of mutant fruit fies with AD :

• Almost perfect ommatidias

• Almost perfect bristles

• Rare formation of holes
